Suture & Needle Holder Guide

Golden rule: match the needle holder jaw to the needle size. Heavy needles damage fine tungsten carbide (TC) inserts; fine needles slip in heavy jaws. This product's recommended suture sizes are listed in the Description tab.
Needle holder Suture sizes Best for
Mayo-Hegar2/0 – 4/0Heavy sutures, tissue under tension
Mathieu / Mathieu Olsen3/0 – 5/0Fast palm-grip suturing, extractions
Lichtenberg3/0 – 5/0Classic dental pattern, long reach
Crile-Wood3/0 – 6/0Versatile all-rounder
Crile Ryde / Fine Swedish4/0 – 6/0Periodontal & implant suturing
Castroviejo Micro5/0 – 8/0Microsurgery, grafts, esthetic zone
Grip the needle correctly
Clamp about two-thirds from the tip — never at the tip or the swage.
Protect the TC jaws
Never clamp suture thread in the jaws — it frays the thread and wears the insert pattern.
Approximate, don't strangulate
Wound edges should just touch; blanching means the suture is too tight.
