The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest supplier. Returns, missing documentation, slow lead times and inconsistent quality all cost more than a few cents a unit. Here is the checklist serious dental buyers use to choose a manufacturer — and the questions worth asking before you commit.
Whether you're a distributor adding a line or a clinic group sourcing direct, picking a dental instrument manufacturer is a due-diligence exercise. Use this checklist to compare suppliers like-for-like. (For a product-manager's angle, see 5 questions before you choose a supplier.)
The buyer's checklist
1. Regulatory documentation
Ask for the ISO 13485 certificate, EU MDR conformity and CE marking, plus FDA registration if you sell into the US. A real manufacturer produces these without hesitation. Missing or vague paperwork is the single biggest red flag — and it will block you in tenders.
2. Quality consistency
Steel grade, edge retention, finish and dimensional consistency batch to batch. Ask how they control it and request samples from stock, not a hand-picked demo.
3. Range depth
Can they be a primary supplier, or only fill gaps? A deep catalogue (3,300+ SKUs) reduces the number of vendors you manage.
4. Lead time & stock
Realistic, committed lead times and stock visibility. Backorders that drag on cost you customers.
5. Private-label capability
If you want your own brand later, can they laser-mark and brand? See our OEM guide.
6. After-sales & communication
Who handles complaints, replacements and reclamations — and how fast? A named contact beats a ticket queue.
